Other Layer 2 Solutions

11 min readarticleIncludes quiz · 2 questions

Lightning is not the only Layer 2 solution for Bitcoin. Liquid enables confidential transactions. Statechains enable off-chain ownership transfers. Each approach makes different tradeoffs.

While Lightning Network dominates Bitcoin's Layer 2, several other scaling solutions exist, each with different trade-offs and use cases.

Sidechains:

  • Liquid Network: Federated sidechain with confidential transactions
  • Rootstock (RSK): Smart contract sidechain with merge mining
  • Elements: Open-source sidechain platform

State Channels (non-Lightning):

  • Spilnter: Discreet log contracts for more complex state
  • BOLT: Bi-directional Off-chain Lightning Transfer protocols
  • Generic state channels: Custom implementations for specific needs

Trade-offs comparison:

  • Lightning: Fast, cheap, Bitcoin-native, payment-focused
  • Liquid: Higher security, privacy features, slower settlement
  • RSK: Smart contracts, merge mining, bridging required
  • Sidechains: More features, trusted federation, less decentralization

Future developments:

  • Schnorr signatures: More efficient multisig and privacy
  • Taproot: Better script privacy and efficiency
  • OP_CAT: Enables more complex Lightning constructions
  • Cross-chain protocols: Interoperability between solutions

Key Takeaway

Different Layer 2 solutions serve different needs. Lightning excels at payments. Liquid excels at fast, confidential settlement between institutions. They are complementary, not competing.
