Hardware Wallet Setup

A hardware wallet is a small, offline device that stores your private keys safely away from the internet. You use it to approve transactions by pressing its physical buttons.

Simple definitions:

  • Seed phrase (12–24 words): The master backup that can recreate your wallet on any device. Guard it like cash or jewelry.
  • PIN: A code that unlocks the device so someone who finds it can't use it.
  • Passphrase (25th word): An optional extra secret that creates a different hidden wallet.
  • Firmware: The device's operating software. Keep it updated from the official source.
  • Address verification: Checking that the address shown on your computer matches the one on the device screen.

Before you begin (checklist):

1) Buy directly from the manufacturer or a trusted reseller. 2) Ensure the box is sealed and device looks new (no preprinted seed inside). 3) Prepare pen + paper/metal plate for your seed backup. 4) Set aside 15–30 minutes in a private, quiet place.

Safe setup steps (quick start):

1) Initialize on the device (not in a browser). 2) Generate a new seed phrase ON THE DEVICE while offline. 3) Write the words in order. Double‑check spelling. Do NOT photograph or store online. 4) Choose a strong PIN (6–8+ digits; avoid birthdays/123456). 5) Optionally add a passphrase if you understand and can back it up separately. 6) Connect to the official wallet app and verify addresses on the device screen before receiving.

Verify authenticity (supply‑chain safety):

  • Download software only from the vendor's official website (manually type the URL).
  • Compare checksums/signatures if provided.
  • On first connect, the official app should recognize the device and may show a genuine/secure element check (varies by model).
  • If you ever see a preprinted seed in the box, stop and return—device is compromised.

Do a test receive/send:

1) Create a receive address and confirm the exact address on the device screen. 2) Send a tiny amount (e.g., $5) from an exchange or another wallet. 3) After it confirms, try sending that small amount back out—approve on the device. This confirms your backups and workflow are correct before moving larger funds.

Ongoing maintenance:

  • Keep firmware up to date (from official app/site).
  • Periodically verify you can read your seed backup.
  • Consider enabling a passphrase only if you can store it safely.
  • For larger holdings, consider a multisig setup later for extra safety.
