Future Applications
In the 1990s, nobody predicted that the internet would enable ride-sharing, social media, or streaming video. Bitcoin and Lightning are at a similar stage — the infrastructure is being built, and the most important applications probably have not been invented yet.
Developers are building new ways to use Bitcoin: machine payments, identity, tokenized assets, and more.
Simple definitions:
- •Machine‑to‑machine: Devices paying each other automatically.
- •Identity proofs: Cryptographic login without passwords.
- •Tokenization: Representing assets digitally.
- •Micropayments: Tiny payments made practical with Lightning.
The most transformative Bitcoin applications likely do not exist yet. Micropayments, machine-to-machine transactions, and programmable money on Lightning are opening design spaces that were previously impossible.
